Flashback Friday: Take me back to Salem

Writer's picture: CassandraCassandra

October 12, 2018 Halloween vacation in Salem, Massachusetts.

Last year, we took a Family Vacation to Salem, Massachusetts, and by far it was my favorite and best vacation we took. 5 1/2 hour flight, not bad at all, we flew American Airlines. We stayed at a Holiday Inn Peabody because every hotel and Bed and Breakfast in Salem was booked for Halloween!Brief History Lesson:

The infamous Salem witch trials began during the spring of 1692, after a group of young girls in Salem Village, Massachusetts, claimed to be possessed by the devil and accused several local women of witchcraft. As a wave of hysteria spread throughout colonial Massachusetts, a special court convened in Salem to hear the cases; the first convicted witch, Bridget Bishop, was hanged that June. Eighteen others followed Bishop to Salem’s Gallows Hill, while some 150 more men, women and children were accused over the next several months. By September 1692, the hysteria had begun to abate and public opinion turned against the trials. Though the Massachusetts General Court later annulled guilty verdicts against accused witches and granted indemnities to their families, bitterness lingered in the community, and the painful legacy of the Salem witch trials would endure for centuries.

And... In1993 Max Dennison lit the Black Flame Candle and resurrected the Sanderson Sisters!

Witch Dungeon Museum

Witch Dungeon Museum. Alex threw Gabby and in the Stocks at the Witch Dungeon Museum, because we were annoying him waiting for our tour.

Gabby met and made friends with some local witches. She's always so polite.

We visited the Town Hall that was featured in Hocus Pocus!

Pirate Museum! Gabby smiling in the face of danger!!!

Our Visit to Plymouth Village:

A top Plymouth Fort

Brief History Lesson:

Plymouth is a coastal town in Massachusetts, south of Boston. It is the site of the first Pilgrim settlement, founded in 1620. Plymouth Rock, a boulder in Pilgrim Memorial State Park, marks the place where settlers are thought to have landed on shore. The Mayflower II, a full-scale replica of the ship that carried the Pilgrims across the Atlantic, is usually anchored at the park.

Plymouth Village, I have to say was my favorite. Just to walk around the Village and to see how life was, was amazing. They actors they portraying real Villagers that lived there, and telling their stories was incredible.

Veiw of the entire Village from the Fort

Just gorgeous! You can see out the water.

Gabby was just enjoying village life.

Our visit to The Burying Point:

The Oldest Burying Grounds in Salem. Beautiful and Eerie at the same time.

Bridget Bishop's memorial:

Bridget Bishop was the first person executed for witchcraft during the Salem witch trials in 1692. Altogether, about 72 people were accused and tried, while 19 others were executed. Bishop may have been accused because she stood to inherit from her deceased husband.

Giles Corey's Memorial:

Giles Corey was pressed to death on September 19, 1692 in Salem Village for refusing to go to trial. Pressing is a brutal form of torture where the victim is stripped of his/her clothes, had a board put on his/her body, and then heavy rocks were slowly placed on the board

Last day in Salem:

And... After 4 days of searching...Behold! we found the Sanderson Sisters on our last day in Salem, which was Halloween. Of Course Gabby was witch!

Salem was wonderful, we to plan on visiting again and seeing the rest of the sites that we missed our first visit.
